Art Show in Michigan

Crystal Palace with Rainbows

My sister, Mona, is being very proactive to promote The Crystal Palace books in Michigan.  She has arranged for books to be exhibited and on sale at an arts benefit event, so I sent her books last week.  Half of any proceeds will go to the arts charity, so it will not be financially helpful to me, but it is good to get the name of the book out there, so people become aware of  it.  Every little bit…this need to promote is unending!  So, if you are reading this, please talk up our book, so more people will check the website and maybe even go onto amazon.com or barnes&noble.com and buy one!

The Crystal Palace: Rebellion in Fairyland is finally out of proofing and on to the publisher for printing.  I will announce when it will be available on amazon.com and barnes&noble.com.  Watch for it!

Galley Proofs for Crystal Palace II

The Crystal Palace: Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince

The Crystal Palace: Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince

I enjoyed the workshops in DesPlaines, IL, very much.  Such fun to work with children again in a classroom.  They were all responsive and earnest about doing their best effort.   :)

See Workshop Reviews for comments from some of the teachers.

Now, I am working with my publisher on the galley proofs for Crystal Palace II.  It is nerve-wracking, trying to make sure I catch all the edits and follow all the rules. Hopefully, I will get that done within a week, so The Crystal Palace II:  Rebellion in Fairyland can get published soon!  Karina and I are already talking over ideas for The Crystal Palace III…

Classroom Workshops

The Crystal Palace: Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince

Next week, Monday through Wednesday, I will be conducting creative writing workshops for nine classrooms in Des Plaines, Illinois:  third grade classrooms on Monday; fourth grade classrooms on Tuesdays; and fifth grade classrooms on Wednesday.  Third and fourth grade students will work with the first book of the series, The Crystal Palace:  Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince, and the fifth grades will work with the second (not yet published book), The Crystal Palace II:  Rebellion in Fairyland. Each workshop involves the students in a readers’ theater presentation of one chapter of the book, and also in illustrating one of the characters.  The students will also be given a picture of another character from the book and asked to write about it, either a description or a short story.  I really enjoy working with students again in this way…the joy of teaching without the headaches (papers to grade, report cards, discipline, etc. )

I have been spending all this week preparing materials.  Actually, this is getting pretty expensive for me:  cardstock, index cards, and especially ink cartridges.  I go through ink like crazy!

Ela Public Library Book Signing

The Crystal Palace: Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince

Karina’s and my book talk at the Ela Public Library in Lake Zurich, Illinois, went very well.  About twenty children and 8 adults were there, and the interest seemed high and enthusiastic.  We included four children in the audience as readers for our “readers’ theater” presentation of chapter 3.  Karina explained each of her illustrations and how she knew what and how to draw them.  We talked about our collaboration.  Questions were asked about our publisher, art supplies needed for  the illustrations, etc.

This week the Chicago Tribune, local sections for Mundelein and Lake Zurich, posted an article about Karina’s and my collaboration.  Check it out:   http://www.triblocal.com/Lake_Zurich/

ELA Public Library Book Signing

Written by Michele Hauser on October 9th, 2009

On Monday, October 12, Karina and I will be doing a book talk, readers’ theater presentation, and book signing at Ela Public Library in Lake Zurich, Illinois, at 10 AM.  Karina helped prepare materials to hand out and for the readers’ theater readers.  Now…will anyone come?  I have calls out to the only three mothers of girls I know in the area, but no answers yet.  How can we have a readers’ theater without readers there?

Blog about Collaboration with my Grandaughter

Written by Michele Hauser on October 7th, 2009

Yesterday my husband and I went to see the movie, “Julie and Julia”.  I was inspired by it in many ways, but one was that Julie was able to connect with her readers through her regular blog.  So…I am hoping to connect with my readers more by chatting a bit about this process of writing and publishing with my granddaughter.  Perhaps some of you might have some comments.  Actually, I have received many comments, but most seem to be in Russian, so I cannot read any of them.  Others I had to delete because the content was not very appropriate!  I do appreciate the feedback from those who did write.

Today a reporter from the Chicago Tribune came to my home to interview Karina and me about a series of nine workshops I will be doing for a school in DesPlaines, IL.  These creative writing workshops will be for three third grade classrooms on Monday; three fourth grade classrooms on Tuesday; and three fifth grade classrooms on Wednesday.  Karina and I are also doing a book talk, book reading, and book signing at 10 AM on Monday, October 12, at the Ela Public Library in Lake Zurich, IL.  Any of you out there able to join us?  I would hate to have a book signing and nobody showed!

Here’s hoping to hear from some of you,

Michele

Welcome!

The Crystal Palace: Rescue of the Baby Fairy Prince

With this site, I am announcing my newly-published book, THE CRYSTAL PALACE: RESCUE OF THE BABY FAIRY PRINCE. The first in a planned series of books, it is an 83-page chapter book, for children aged 5-12.  The second, THE CRYSTAL PALACE #2: REBELLION IN FAIRYLAND, will be published this fall. My nine-year-old granddaughter Karina is the illustrator for both, which adds a childlike authenticity.  Most children are intrigued and affirmed with the idea that the illustrator is a child.

Included are lesson plans for a literature circle unit for elementary classrooms, along with classroom activity leaflets, readers’ theater scripts, discussion questions, writing prompts, and coloring pages that go along with the book.    I am hoping for conversation with readers, for feedback, suggestions and discussion.

For more details, excerpts, and links to the online bookstores or to contact me by email, please see my publisher author webpage for The Crystal Palace: http://www.outskirtspress.com/crystalpalace

I hope you come back often and contribute often.  I look forward to our interchange of ideas.
